A Modern Creed: 'A Faith to Live By' was written by the Revd. Dr Sam Wells, Vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields and is reproduced from his book: Humbler Faith, Bigger God (2022) ISBN 978-1-78622-418-7

A Modern Creed: 'A Faith to Live by'

  I trust in perfect relationship, utter with, true essence, forever,

  so distinct that we say Trinity, so together that we say God.

  I trust that this Trinity willed to enjoy us as a companion,

  and so initiated existence, flung forth the universe, fostered the world,

  and drew us out of evolving life, so as to come among us in Jesus Christ.

  In Jesus, born of Mary, fully human, fully divine,

  we behold God with us, forever now,

  guiding us to be with God, ourselves, one another, and all creation.

  in his death we see God’s pledge to be with us, whatever happens;

  in his resurrection we behold nothing can separate us from God;

  in his ascension we discover God’s will finally to draw us

  into eternal essence, utter with, forever.

  I trust in the Holy Spirit, active since the dawn of time,

  at work in every living being from when its life begins.

  The Spirit dismantles every barrier to our being with one another,

  making us present to Christ and Christ present to us.

  The Spirit dwells in the covenant between God and Moses

  and gives the church everything it needs.

  The Spirit prepares every heart to be with God

  and cultivates the kingdom in believer,

  those of other faiths and unbeliever alike.

  I trust in the one whom Jesus called Father,

  who sends Jesus and the Holy Spirit,

  who through them shares our prayers,

  and is in communion with us

  through baptism, Eucharist, Scripture,

  and encounter with the rejected and isolated.

  Together the Trinity heals our past through forgiveness

  and bestows our future in everlasting relationship,

that all creation be finally fulfilled in God’s glory. Amen.
